How to keep woolen textiles in perfect condition?

How to care for wool products? This question comes back to us, especially when winter approaches and we take out our favorite wool pillows, rugs and blankets that decorate our sofa or bedspreads in the bedroom. It is worth taking care of these precious things so that they will please us for many years.

How to wash wool products?

We have two pieces of news for you. The bad news is this: woolen items are best washed by hand, making sure that washing in water is permitted in the care instructions. (Many of our woolen blankets can be washed by hand, but the PO SIMPLY WENA collection made of boiled wool only allows dry cleaning.) The good news? We can do it rarely, which is an additional convenience. Woolen products, especially those with a higher content of natural fiber, do not require frequent washing, and wool does not absorb odors so easily. Therefore, if our woolen blankets are not very dirty, but only need to be refreshed, it is enough to air them, e.g. on the balcony or in the bathroom, spreading them flat to avoid deformation. Remember that every time you plan to wash woolen products, first look at the care instructions sewn into each product. The washing instructions depend primarily on the composition, but also on the size of the product.

Secondly, you need to treat wool gently, just like you would hair. For those who value wool for its unique properties, it is obvious that tugging, pulling or brutal squeezing and wringing are absolutely forbidden. When washing, you need to be gentle and gently knead woolen knits to remove excess water before hanging.

When it comes to washing, it is also worth mentioning the wool washing programs available in washing machines, which usually work at a low temperature of 30 degrees. Some recommend a short wash in the washing machine with a short spin at high speed, but if you are not sure about the reaction of your woolen textiles to a new washing machine, it is better to start by washing an old sweater or hat with a similar composition to avoid unpleasant surprises. Just like hair, wool products are best washed in lukewarm water and using mild detergents designed specifically for wool or cashmere. When drying woolen textiles, especially throws or blankets, it is better to avoid hanging them on the dryer, and instead lay them flat so that they maintain their shape.

The third option is dry cleaning, especially for larger textiles such as throws or blankets. Although it is a slightly more expensive solution, it will certainly protect our wool products from damage, felting or loss of shape.

How to care for woolen blankets and throws?

The lifespan of wool products depends not only on proper washing, but also on proper storage. When storing wool products on shelves or in drawers, it is important that they have enough space to "breathe".

Wool shaver - worth having!

Wool blankets, pillows and throws require regular de-pilling, which is a natural process for products with a high wool content. The most common method for removing pills is to use a razor, but be careful not to apply too much pressure and to ensure that no threads are exposed. There are also manual methods, such as a wool comb, a scourer or a so-called "peeler", which are also worth using.

Moths can be a serious threat to wool products. To prevent them, you can use natural moth-repellent scents or place the textiles in the freezer to kill any moth eggs. It is also worth using preventative measures such as bags of dried lavender and storing clean textiles in vacuum bags outside the season of use.

Although caring for wool products requires some work, it is worth the effort to enjoy their beautiful appearance and exceptional heating properties for many years.
