A Practical Guide to Cotton

You hear all the time that cotton textiles are the best choice, which is why you pay attention to the composition of t-shirts, jeans, bed linen and blankets when shopping. But do you know why it is actually worth reaching for cotton? What makes this material better than the equally popular polyester? Cotton is the heroine of our today's post, in which we will explain what makes it stand out and why it is worth reaching for.

How is cotton made?

Cotton is a natural raw material of plant origin, known since before our era, which was brought to Europe by Arab traders around 800 AD. Until the 18th century, cotton was an expensive material to produce, so few people could afford it. Today, it is one of the most commonly used raw materials, used to produce clothing, textiles, hygiene products and toys.

It is obtained from cotton fibers, a plant from the mallow family, cultivated mainly for the production of fiber. In the European Union, cotton is grown in only three countries: Greece, Spain and Bulgaria. The largest producers of cotton are China, India, the USA, Pakistan, Brazil, Uzbekistan and Turkey . Cotton is collected from the fields mechanically, then cleaned, selected and combed. In the next stage, cotton yarn is produced, which is subjected to twisting processes, which have a significant impact on the quality of the material. At the very end, cotton knitwear is created from the yarn.

Why choose cotton textiles?

Cotton is an extremely popular material due to its unique properties. One of the most frequently mentioned features of cotton is its hygroscopicity . This means that the material absorbs moisture very well and is also breathable, which is why thin cotton T-shirts are perfect for summer. In cotton, our skin breathes and sweats less, which cannot be said about some artificial materials that do not let air through. Cotton also retains heat , which is why thick, thick cotton knitwear is great for making bathrobes, blankets and sweatshirts.

An important feature of cotton is that it does not cause allergies or irritations , which is why your skin will thank you for cotton bedding and clothing. It is pleasant to the skin and pleasant to the touch, which is why it does not "bite" and can have direct contact with the body.

This material is also incredibly easy to wash and iron, which means that cotton products are easy to keep clean . You don't have to take your cotton blanket to the laundry - you can easily wash it in your home washing machine. Cotton is resistant to stretching and high temperatures , but to extend its life, you should always follow the instructions on the label.

While some cotton products can be washed at up to 95°C, we recommend washing cotton bedding at a maximum of 40°C using a mild detergent. To avoid shrinkage and damage to the fabric, do not tumble dry, bleach or chlorinate.
